A comparative study of marine litter on the seafloor of coastal areas in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Seas ArchiMer
Ioakeimidis, C.; Zeri, C.; Kaberi, H.; Galatchi, M.; Antoniadis, K.; Streftaris, N.; Galgani, Francois; Papathanassiou, E.; Papatheodorou, G..
In the present work, abundance, spatial distribution and qualitative composition, of benthic marine litter, were investigated in five study areas from the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Seas (Saronikos, Patras and Echinades Gulfs; Limassol Gulf; Constanta Bay). Surveys were performed using the monitoring protocol proposed by the Technical Group for Marine Litter. Densities ranged from 24 items/km(2) to 1211 items/km(2), with the Saronikos Gulf being the most affected area. Plastics were predominant in all study areas ranging from 45.2% to 95%. Metals and Glass/Ceramics reached maximum values of 21.9% and of 22.4%. The size distribution of litter items showed that >= 50% fall into medium size categories (10 x 10 cm, 20 x 20 cm) along with an elevated...

Échantillons rocheux provenant de « volcans de boue » de Méditerranée orientale ArchiMer
Huguen, Caroline; Benkhelil, J; Giresse, P; Mascle, Jean; Muller, C; Woodside, John; Zitter, T; The Medinaut Scientific Party,.
In the eastern Mediterranean, numerous argilo-kinetic manifestations, commonly named 'mud volcanoes', have been identified and studied in some detail during the last twenty years using several techniques. The Medinaut survey (December 1998) has provided new insights into this phenomenon through twenty deep dives performed with the submersible Nautile within two areas particularly active in terms of mud expulsions: the central Mediterranean ridge south of Crete, and the Anaximander mountains area, south of Turkey. The morphology, petrography, microstructure and biostratigraphy of different clasts sampled in the two areas helped to better understand the mud volcano formation and subsequent evolution. Paleoenvironmental conditions, ranging from deep marine...

Ecologie de la faune associée aux émissions de fluides froids de Méditerranée orientale profonde ArchiMer
Ritt, Benedicte.
The major objectives of this thesis were to study the structure, functioning and dynamics of different faunal assemblages associated with cold seep ecosystems in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. We focused our study on three main sites: the Marmara Sea, the Mediterranean ridge and the Nile deep sea fan. This thesis aims at determining the environmental signature of Mediterranean sites and the characteristics of the associated fauna at European and global scales. The specific objectives were to (1) determine the composition, diversity, density, biomass of invertebrate assemblages, (2) characterize biogeochemical conditions within different microhabitats in the vicinity of organisms, (3) to define the trophic relationships amongst seep fauna using stable...

Evidence for chemoautotrophic symbiosis in a Mediterranean cold seep clam (Bivalvia : Lucinidae): comparative sequence analysis of bacterial 16S rRNA, APS reductase and RubisCO genes ArchiMer
Duperron, Sebastien; Fiala Medioni, Aline; Caprais, Jean-claude; Olu, Karine; Sibuet, Myriam.
Symbioses between lucinid clams (Bivalvia: Lucinidae) and autotrophic sulphide-oxidizing bacteria have mainly been studied in shallow coastal species, and information regarding deep-sea species is scarce. Here we study the symbiosis of a clam, resembling Lucinoma kazani, which was recently collected in sediment cores from new cold-seep sites in the vicinity of the Nile deep-sea fan, eastern Mediterranean, at depths ranging from 507 to 1691 m. A dominant bacterial phylotype, related to the sulphide-oxidizing symbiont of Lucinoma aequizonata, was identified in gill tissue by comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. A second phylotype, related to spirochete sequences, was identified twice in a library of 94 clones. Comparative analyses of gene sequences...

High-resolution mapping of large gas emitting mud volcanoes on the Egyptian continental margin (Nile Deep Sea Fan) by AUV surveys ArchiMer
Dupre, Stephanie; Buffet, G.; Mascle, J.; Foucher, Jean-paul; Gauger, S.; Boetius, A.; Marfia, Christian.
Two highly active mud volcanoes located in 990-1,265 m water depths were mapped on the northern Egyptian continental slope during the BIONIL expedition of R/V Meteor in October 2006. High-resolution swath bathymetry and backscatter imagery were acquired with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV)-mounted multibeam echosounder, operating at a frequency of 200 kHz. Data allowed for the construction of similar to 1 m pixel bathymetry and backscatter maps. The newly produced maps provide details of the seabed morphology and texture, and insights into the formation of the two mud volcanoes. They also contain key indicators on the distribution of seepage and its tectonic control. The acquisition of high-resolution seafloor bathymetry and acoustic imagery maps...

Hydrography and circulation south of Cyprus in late summer 1995 and in spring 1996 ArchiMer
Zodiatis, G; Theodorou, A; Demetropoulos, A.
The hydrodynamical characteristics of the area south of Cyprus in the Levantine Sea were examined in late summer 1995 and in spring 1996. Analysis of the CTD data collected, provided a new dynamic picture of the Cyprus Basin and revealed the existence of the Cyprus Basin cyclonic eddy. The latter circulated to the south of Cyprus and exhibited marked seasonality. Production of Levantine Intermediate Water in the area of the latter eddy occurred. Occasionally, between the Cyprus Basin cyclonic eddy and the southern coast of Cyprus a warm current, the Cyprus coastal current appears to intrude from the east. In late summer 1995, the spatial fluctuations of the mid-Mediterranean jet, the main current of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, caused the splitting of...

Penetration of coastal waters into the Eastern Mediterranean Sea using the SeaWiFS data ArchiMer
Karabashev, G; Evdoshenko, M; Sheberstov, S.
Offward transport of surface coastal waters was studied in the Eastern Mediterranean from 31degrees to 37degrees N between 31degrees to 36degrees E using cluster analysis of water-leaving radiance spectra from SeaWiFS color scanner imagery for spring-summer period of 1998. Some types of spectra were found to be characteristic of products of mixing of coastal and offshore waters and served as a quasiconservative tracer of water transport. Three sectors of the eastern coastal zone supplied colored and suspended matter into the open sea areas as occasional pulse discharges of 3-5 week periodicity. The Haifa sector was the most powerful source of such matter producing traceable separate radiance inhomogeneities as far as 200 km west of Haifa. It appears that...

Source and development of large manganese enrichments above eastern Mediterranean sapropel S1 ArchiMer
Reitz, Anja; Thomson, John; De Lange, Gert J.; Hensen, Christian.
[ 1] The residual dark unit of the most recent eastern Mediterranean sapropel (S1) is usually overlain by sediments with enhanced concentrations of MnO(x) in two separated layers. The variability and magnitude of the Mn enrichment at different locations and water depths indicate that Mn must have been added preferentially to sediments at intermediate ( 1 - 2 km) water depths. We propose a two-stage mechanism for the Mn enrichment that involves decreasing oxygenation with increasing water depth. This mechanism involves the loss of reduced Mn(2+) from the deepest sediments (> 2 km water depth) into overlying anoxic waters and a variable gain of MnOx in sediments in contact with oxygenated waters at shallower depth. In the S1 unit that receives the extra...

The Asi River's Estimated Nutrient Load and Effects on the Eastern Mediterranean ArchiMer
Kilic, Ece; Akpinar, Anil; Yucel, Nebil.
Rivers are primary receiving environments for agricultural runoff and for domestic and industrial discharges. Rivers assimilate and treat incoming pollution load until self-purification capacity is reached. The remaining pollution load and natural nutrients are carried to and discharged into the sea causing variations in the receiving area's nutrient concentration. This study evaluated nutrient loads and effects of the Asi River on the northeastern Mediterranean Sea. Monitoring data from 2006 to 2014 from the State of Hydraulic Works of Turkey were analyzed with an interpolation-based average-estimator model for nutrient load calculation. The nutrient load's impact on the receiving area was determined using satellite images. Annual nitrite (NO2), nitrate...

The genus Telmatactis Gravier, 1916 (Actiniaria: Acontiaria: Isophelliidae) in Greece and the eastern Mediterranean Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den.
Three species of the actinian genus Telmatactis Gravier, 1916, viz. T. forskalii (Ehrenberg, 1834), T. solidago (Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864) and T. cricoides (Duchassaing, 1850), occurring in Greece and the eastern Mediterranean, are described and discussed. Detailed data on the cnidom of the three species are provided. The characteristic penicilli of members of the genus Telmatactis are discussed. These penicilli were classified by Schmidt (1969, 1972) as p-rhabdoids (= penicilli) B1b, but it is here claimed that they actually belong in Schmidt's B2 group (provisionally as penicilli B2c). They correspond in general form and as to their distribution in the actinian polyp with the more usual penicilli B2a sensu Schmidt (1969), but unlike these, they...

The timing of Mediterranean sapropel deposition relative to insolation, sea-level and African monsoon changes ArchiMer
Grant, K. M.; Grimm, R.; Mikolajewicz, U.; Marino, G.; Ziegler, M.; Rohling, E. J..
The Mediterranean basin is sensitive to global sea-level changes and African monsoon variability on orbital timescales. Both of these processes are thought to be important to the deposition of organic-rich sediment layers or 'sapropels' throughout the eastern Mediterranean, yet their relative influences remain ambiguous. A related issue is that an assumed 3-kyr lag between boreal insolation maxima and sapropel mid-points remains to be tested. Here we present new geochemical and ice-volume-corrected planktonic foraminiferal stable isotope records for sapropels S1 (Holocene), S3, S4, and S5 (Marine Isotope Stage 5) in core LC21 from the southern Aegean Sea. The records have a radiometrically constrained chronology that has already been synchronised with the...

Thermal history of deep-sea sediments as a record of recent changes in the deep circulation of the eastern Mediterranean ArchiMer
Della Vedova, B; Pellis, G; Camerlenghi, A; Foucher, Jean-paul; Harmegnies, Francois.
[1] During three cruises of the MEDRIFF project in 1993 and 1994, 154 geothermal heat flow measurements and seven CTD profiles in the water column have been collected along a 300 km SW-NE oriented transect traversing the Mediterranean Ridge accretionary complex. The original goal of the measurements was to identify areas of anomalous heat flow that could be interpreted as possible sites for fluid outflow. Contrary to expectations, the upper few meters of the temperature profiles in the sediments showed decreasing temperature from the seafloor down to 3 to 6 m depth indicating consistently transient temperature regimes. The only exception ( positive heat flow) was found in the Sirte abyssal plain. Measurements collected in the same area at different times...

Unexpected co-occurrence of six bacterial symbionts in the gills of the cold seep mussel Idas sp (Bivalvia : Mytilidae) ArchiMer
Duperron, Sebastien; Halary, S; Lorion, J; Sibuet, Myriam; Gaill, F.
Bathymodioline mussels occur in chemosynthesis-based ecosystems such as cold seeps, hydrothermal vents and organic debris worldwide. Their key adaptation to these environments is their association with bacterial endosymbionts which ensure a chemosynthetic primary production based on the oxidation of reduced compounds such as methane and sulfide. We herein report a multiple symbiosis involving six distinct bacterial 16S rRNA phylotypes, including two belonging to groups not yet reported as symbionts in mytilids, in a small Idas mussel found on carbonate crusts in a cold seep area located north to the Nile deep-sea fan (Eastern Mediterranean). Symbionts co-occur within hosts bacteriocytes based on fluorescence in situ hybridizations, and sequencing of...
